"Smudging" is the burning of sacred herbs in cleansing, purification and prayer ceremonies.  Feathers are a connection to the "air" forces; air being one of the four elements (earth, air, fire & water) and help to move energy.  Using feathers ritually helps you to free your intuitive faculties and awaken into your whole self.  Many cultures and belief systems have sacred smudging rituals and ceremonies.

No knots or glue are used in the actual creation of Smudge feathers.  This aids in the movement of Sprit and Energy.

Smudging basics:  Place sacred herbs in an abalone shell or other heat-proof container.  Ignite the herbs and let them burn for a few seconds before you extinguish them.  They will continue to smolder.  Use a smudge feather to direct the smoke around the space or person you are smudging while you meditate and pray.  You are done when the smoke rises cleanly in a straight line signifying positive energy.  Some sacred herbs are: Cedar for attracting good influences, Sage for purification and cleansing and Pinion Pine for protection and blessing.
