DRUM FEATHERS

Up

Drum Feathers are beaded to decorate a ceremonial item.  Ritual and sacred items need decorations crafted with their unique purpose in mind.  I use natural feathers collected in the wild as much as possible, and I do not use knots or glue in their assembly (see smudge feathers).  Depending on the feather, it is decorated singly or as part of a cluster.  All feathers are washed and sanitized before decoration.

Decorations include some or all of the following:  Off loom bead weaving of my own invention, beaded fringe in a variety of styles, bead fetishes woven from smaller beads antique and vintage beads, pearls, shells, semi precious stones, crystals, sea glass, silver, copper, pewter and my own original lampworked beads which often include embedded goldstone, copper or fine silver.

I make my own fiber cording, and all beadwork is done without knots, to facilitate the flow of energy and spirit.  Making these items is an honor, a passion and a meditation.

"Sacred Friendship"

Gone. Now on a
medicine staff.

Traveling at Thanksgiving to visit family, we had an accident. While we were dealing with that, Rusty got his teeth on the fascinating thing I had been working on, which was nearly completed. A double tragedy, that day. Fortunately for the dog, not a triple tragedy!

This is what is left after the Airedale Terrier puppy finds a work in progress.
The dog and the feathers survived the best.  Since nothing in the beadwork is glued,
this cluster can be repaired, although it will require a totally new tail.
You could almost say the same for the dog!
